Frequently Asked Questions

Is the front of my property line at the edge of the pavement?

Not in all cases; roads are not always built in the center of the right-of-way.  Many older roads meander back and forth, like a snake, within the right-of-way.  To verify your front property line, you should always measure from a known property pin or marker.  If you do not have one, look across the road (street) for one and measure back to your side.  Most, not all, right-of-way widths are 50 feet wide.  That is a good place to start.  To be sure, always refer to a qualified surveyor to accurate measurements.

Why did the plow hit my mailbox?

Your mailbox is the only item owned by you that may be placed within the Town’s right-of-way, without specific permission.  Federal law dictates that you shall have a mail receptacle available for US mail delivery.  While this is routine, Public Works reminds everyone that such a mail receptacle is just that, and should not be considered a monument to be constructed of granite, steel or some other impervious material.  The Town is also concerned for others should someone (other than the plow) hit it and become injured.  REMEMBER – keep it simple but effective.  The postal service has specific regulations for its location, type and height.  The town as well recommends certain design criteria.  It should be able to take a light  “hit” of snow, swing away, then reposition itself for mail delivery.  It should be the proper height.  Generally 42” will allow the plow to pass below it and aid in snow removal for the mail carrier.  Finally, remember to have your street number on the box, especially for 911.

What does Public Works give me for my tax dollar?

As mentioned on our home page, we are responsible for public road, sewer  and sign maintenance.  We clean and maintain all town-owned buildings and lands. We maintain all street lights, the Glendale Docks for island dwellers; we help sponsor our annual Spring Cleanup, usually the end of April, each year.  We assist in coordinating and running the Annual Household Hazardous Waste Day each July, and assist other agencies and departments in the prudent running of affairs of the town in general.

What can I do to help Public Works be more efficient?

You can call in problems that you find, such as pot holes, damaged or dangerous trees, damaged or missing street signs, storm damage, blocked culverts or drainage ways, and any other situations that you feel Public Works could assist with.  While we try our best to monitor the Town routinely, we cannot be everywhere all the time, so we rely on citizens helping out by alerting us to dangers around town.
