Gilford Public Library
Library Trustees Meeting
9/19/08
Present: Robert Kammeraad, Daryl Thompson, Polly Sanfacon, Tracey Petrozzi, Katherine Dormody
Absent: Weldon Bosworth
Meeting called to order at 9:05 by Chairman, Robert Kammeraad.
Budget 2009- Selectmen approved.
A discussion on a blog entry about the Library by a Budget Committee member took place. The Library Trustees felt that the Code of Ethics was violated by the entry insofar abusive language is used and out in the public sphere. The Trustees questioned the ability of the author of the blog to be fair and reasonable. It was voted to send a letter to the Budget Committee Chairman to ask that this member not serve as a liason for the Library due to the hostile nature of his writings on the Library.
Programs- Gaming in the Library. A discussion took place on the enrichment activities involving gaming that have taken place over the last 9 months. Robert does not like the term ‘gaming’ as it often refers to gambling. Katherine explained that it is also a term used for video games. A discussion took place on how gaming can be educational and enriching and how it fits in with our service goals. Daryl suggested that the Trustees come to more of the programs offered so that they can be better advocates of the transformational effects that the library has on our community. She also has invited Sue Cutillo from the Friends of the Library who has been working on a grant for new computers for the Teen room to come to the next Trustees meeting to talk about public
libraries and teen programming.
Email- Weldon emailed some questions about the role and purview of the Board of Trustees. The Trustees were reminded that email should only be used to set up meetings and/or clarify minutes as the Right to Know Law covers email. The Trustees agreed to hold more meetings if necessary. Polly brought up that the New Hampshire Library Trustees Association goes over the Board of Trustees’ responsibilities in the orientation sessions given a couple of time each year. Katherine mentioned the New Hampshire Statutes covering libraries is very informative.
Meeting adjourned, next meeting is a regular meeting on October 14, 8:30 a.m.
