Street Lighting

Gilford maintains a number of streetlights that illuminate strategic locations.  Being very concerned about “light pollution”, the Board of Selectmen have adopted a policy whereby new light requests are reviewed for need and safety.  The policy below highlights the concerns of the Board:

“ The Board of Selectmen recognizes the rural character of the Town of Gilford, and the negative impact of artificial illumination along town roads.  The Board further recognizes that individual property owner’s concerns about security are best addressed through the installation of security lights on private property.

The Selectmen hereby adopt a policy of not installing any new street lights in the community, unless the preponderance of evidence submitted to the Board of Selectmen demonstrates overwhelming safety concerns and justifies placement of a light.”
